Pantomime - the very word insinuates silliness, fun, singing and shouting. Oh yes it does!!
It's a tradition, usually at Christmas, which incorporates audience participation, slapstick, topical jokes, and, of course, the leading male character being played by a girl; and the pantomime dame is played by a man!!
It's all a lot of fun, and a far cry from the origins of panto, back in the days of the Ancient Greeks.
Typically, a pantomime is based on a well loved childrens story; Aladdin, Babes In The Wood, Cinderella, Dick Whittington, Snow White; to name but a few.
It has also been tradition for a well-known celebrity to take part; usually someone who has appeared in prime-time television; or someone for whom pantomime is a mile away from their usual, Thespian, performances.
Do you have a favourite pantomime? Are you going to see one this year?
